Place Coullet — a public square reimagined as a poetic, immersive chromatic experience.
Saint-Raphaël, on the French Riviera, asked for more than functional public lighting. The brief from ADS DESIGN France was to turn Place Coullet into a destination — somewhere residents and visitors would gather not because it was the way home, but because it was somewhere to be.
The answer arrived as 200 suspended luminous spheres, hung in a constellation above the square. By day the spheres read as a poetic chromatic gesture — sculptural objects in vivid colours, animating the plaza without any artificial illumination. By night they become a programmable instrument: a fully synchronised lighting performance that can transition through the spectrum, or settle into a slow twilight star-flicker that simulates a starry sky overhead.
The lighting tool that made it possible is the MaxiLED Large Globe DMX RGBW — 48 V, two-core MaxiLINK cable carrying both power and DMX data, every globe individually addressable. ADS DESIGN France designed the installation; MaxiLED supplied the system.
The 200 spheres are suspended at varying heights across the square — a constellation, not a grid. Each globe is independently addressable, which means every dot in the constellation can be controlled in real time: tone, intensity, transition.
MaxiLINK two-core cable carries both 48 VDC power and DMX512 data along the same conductor — no separate signal harness across the canopy. Pharos Architectural Controls handle the programme: synchronised colour sweeps that span all 200 globes, slow breathing cycles for the early evening register, a twilight flicker programme that emulates a starry sky after midnight. At the press of a button, the whole square shifts mood.
By day, the installation radiates vivid colours from the globes' painted shells — energising the public square naturally without any artificial illumination. It reads as a sculptural intervention: 200 floating points of saturated colour against the sky of the Côte d'Azur.
By night, the spheres become an immersive lighting performance. The Pharos Architectural Controls drive the full DMX RGBW spectrum across the square — sweeping chromatic transitions, slow colour breathing, a serene twilight star-flicker simulating a starry night sky over the plaza. The installation captivates the senses and sets a new benchmark for creative, sustainable urban design.
