Background

A heritage distillery, retrofitted to programmable colour.

Ardbeg Distillery has been producing single malt Scotch whisky on the Hebridean Isle of Islay since 1815. As part of the visitor centre upgrade, the brief asked for a lighting system that would deliver full DMX RGBW colour control across the public-facing spaces without rewiring the building — the original wiring infrastructure had to be preserved.

The technical answer was the MaxiLED GU10 DMX RGBW — a drop-in retrofit for any existing GU10 fitting. Same socket, same power infrastructure, no new wiring runs. The GU10 lamp body integrates the patented MaxiLINK technology, which means DMX 512 control is carried over the same two-core cable that feeds power. The existing infrastructure stays — only the lamps change.

The Pharos controller drives the full chromatic programme — calibrated warm white for daytime operations, full DMX RGBW for tastings, special events and visitor experiences. The lamps are individually addressable, allowing fine-grained scene programming across rooms and architectural details.

The MaxiLED GU10 DMX RGBW lamp is a direct drop-in for any existing GU10 fitting. The visitor centre install at Ardbeg involved removing the original GU10 lamps and inserting the MaxiLED equivalent — the existing socket, ceiling housing and power wiring stay exactly as they are. Each lamp is individually addressable over DMX512, which means a heritage interior with a hundred existing GU10 points can be turned into a fully programmable RGBW colour space in a single lamp-change session.

The MaxiLINK protocol is the technical key: the GU10 lamp itself carries the DMX 512 data signal back over the same two-core that delivers power. No new signal harness, no rewiring of the existing GU10 circuits — the lamp does the work. The Pharos controller in the equipment room then drives the full chromatic programme over MaxiLINK.

A drop-in lamp. A programmable distillery.

By day, the GU10 lamps run a calibrated warm-white register — visitor-comfortable, hospitality-appropriate, indistinguishable from a traditional GU10 install. The existing ceiling rose, the existing fitting, the existing cabling — all preserved.

For events, the same lamps become a full DMX RGBW palette. Saturated colour programmes, breathing transitions, scene programming across rooms and architectural details — the visitor centre becomes a fully programmable lighting space without a single new cable.
