A third-party certification for lighting that respects the night.

DarkSky International (formerly the International Dark-Sky Association) is the recognised worldwide authority combatting light pollution. Their DarkSky Approved programme provides objective, third-party certification for outdoor luminaires that minimise glare, reduce light trespass and do not pollute the night sky.

Certification is granted only when a fixture meets the full set of technical criteria — verified by DarkSky's lighting team. Approved luminaires are listed in the public DarkSky database, accessible to specifiers, lighting designers, and municipalities worldwide.

Restrict upward-directed light

Light should be emitted only where needed. Approved fixtures are shielded so they do not emit light above the horizontal plane.

Avoid glare

Brightness directed at the eyes is limited. Approved luminaires are designed to keep light below the line of sight and avoid disability glare.

Avoid over-lighting

Output is matched to the task. Excess lumens waste energy, create sky glow, and disrupt nocturnal ecosystems.

Use dimming and lighting controls

Approved installations integrate controls (timers, sensors, dimming schedules) to reduce output when full intensity is not required.

Minimise short-wavelength (blue) light

Limit cool-white, blue-rich emissions that scatter further in the atmosphere and have the highest impact on wildlife and human circadian rhythms.

Place rubber grommets. With the catenary cable taut and secure above the MaxiLED strand cable, place a rubber grommet 20 mm (0.79 in) either side of the globe housing. The two grommets act as stops that hold the globe in position so it cannot slide along the cable.

Secure with a UV zip tie. Using a UV-resistant zip tie (4.8 mm width), clamp each grommet up against the catenary cable and trim the excess. This locks the globe in place so it cannot move; the grommet stays placed over the MaxiLED cable.

Repeat & connect. Repeat Steps 1–2 to fix every globe along the strand until the installation is complete, then connect the strand to the correct transformer.

Alternative · hoop effect. For a deeper, more arched catenary, do not fix the grommets to the support cable — the strand is left free to drape into a decorative hoop between the two anchor points. Keep voltage drop below 5% across the strand.

Twist to release. If a globe stops illuminating, push the clear lens toward the base and rotate clockwise to release it (Figure B).

Replace the LED module. Pull the LED module straight down out of its solderless socket (Figure C), fit the replacement, then twist the lens counter-clockwise until it clicks. Suitable for wet locations — no tools, no soldering.
