Background

Industrial heritage, lit without being seen.

Nestled within the Borough of Knowsley in Merseyside is the small town of Prescot. As part of a wider programme celebrating the townships of Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, four new pieces of public art have been installed at key gateway positions leading into and out of the town — each one a welcome to visitors.

The artwork was funded by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority through the Local Growth Fund, and designed by artist Martin Herron following extensive consultation with the local community — including two local primary schools, residents and community organisations. The fourth and final installation, at Prescot train station, reflects the town’s rich industrial history: watchmaking, pottery and mining.

To illuminate the artwork during the hours of darkness, a custom-made solution from MaxiLED was specified. Based on the MaxiDEPTH 102, it delivers static white 4000K through a diffusing lens developed to integrate into the artwork itself — a deliberately discreet fixture, so viewers see the installation and not the light fitting.

Other key partners in the project include Jo Dry of Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, SSE Contracting and Art Fabrications.
