700 Small Globe luminaires in static blue turn an 18 m / 59 ft steel lattice into a beacon hovering above the Rossendale Valley.
Halo is an 18 m / 59 ft-diameter steel lattice structure standing on a tripod five metres above the ground at Top o’Slate — a former landfill site in the hills above Haslingden, in the Rossendale Valley. It was delivered under the REMADE in Lancashire programme, a scheme led by Rossendale Borough Council and Groundwork Pennine Lancashire to reclaim 33 hectares of land and return it to public use.
Rossendale Council appointed Lighting and Building Services Ltd to create the lighting design, and Dave Laraway of Lighting and Building Services specified MaxiLED Lighting to supply the lighting. MaxiLED Lighting selected the Small Globe series to fit the design brief: 700 luminaires in static blue, fixed across the lattice, producing a sky-blue glow after dark. Elevated on its tripod at a high vantage point, the lit structure appears to hover above the town.
The low-energy LEDs are powered by a wind turbine — green energy that minimises light pollution and avoids disruption to local wildlife.
From its hilltop position, Halo reads as a beacon welcoming visitors arriving on the A56 into Lancashire — a piece of public art that joins the urban and rural landscape in a single gesture of light.
