Oban is a resort town in the Argyll and Bute council area on the West coast of Scotland — the main ferry gateway to the western islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Its population of 8,500 can grow beyond 25,000 in the summer months, as visitors flock to the town to board onward ferries.
The local council planned a rejuvenation of the front harbour and esplanade with modern hard landscaping and lighting, and the replacement of the existing festoon fittings was a key component. The brief was to future-proof the lighting design: a programmable system that would let the council react to events and key occasions throughout the calendar.
MaxiLED Lighting worked closely with the council’s appointed consultant and contractor to design a scheme using the MaxiLED Large Globe RGBW festoon. One major obstacle: the controller sat on one side of the road, the festoon on the other — with no way of running CAT5 cabling between them. The answer was a wireless data link, completing the project without road closures or disruption to the busy town.
MaxiLED Lighting liaised with the installation contractor throughout the project period and commissioned the system on site — a harbour front that now shifts colour with the town’s calendar.
