Background

A square once avoided, now crowned with stars.

In Stockholm’s Tensta district, the central square and taxi rank outside the shopping centre — Taxingeplan — had long been perceived as unsafe: secluded, poorly visible, and troubled by illegal driving that put visitors at risk. The City Council of Stockholm launched a regeneration project with four objectives: make visitors feel safer, add green space, improve traffic safety, and introduce better lighting.

Prominent lighting designers Light Bureau were appointed to the scheme, and Stockholm Lighting was brought in to source and specify the lighting solutions. Their choice for the square’s canopy: the MaxiLED Globe Series — exceptionally long strands of globe-lensed LEDs with rugged injection-moulded outer globes and heavy-gauge wiring, built to withstand harsh conditions. Form with function: durability, and a spectacular star-like effect.

A Pharos LPC1 runs the programme: a dynamic colour scene for each day of the week until 22:00, when the globes switch to functional white light until 06:00 — then the dynamic cycle begins again.

Together with the wider regeneration — refurbishment, an expanded square, renovated plant beds, trees pruned for visibility — Taxingeplan now has a better atmosphere: safer and more accessible for Tensta’s residents and visitors.
